Nearly
250 attended Ystrad Rhondda’s seniors presentation
evening at Rhondda Fawr sports centre where guests included
former Wales Internationals Gary Jones, Paul Knight &
guest speaker Garin Jenkins.
Master of Ceremonies John Watts welcomed the above guests
plus the Dewar Shield winning Rhondda Schools under 15’s
& Cambrian Welfare RFC whose recent success in the Welsh
Brewers was noted.
Awards were handed to David Ballant for second team most
committed, Paul Meredith for second team player’s
player of the year, Daniel Smith for second team player
of the year.
Mark Griffiths received the clubman of the year before Schools
under 15’s Captain Callum Thomas was given a gift
to mark the season’s achievements of his side.
Next up it was Marc Street, an Ystrad youth player who made
several first team appearances through the season, Marc
was presented with his Boys Clubs of Wales Cap.
Nathan Rees who impressed so much last season in his first
year with the seniors he was snapped up by Cardiff &
he received his Wales Cap, Nathan is due to figure for Wales
in the inaugural World Cup under 20’s later this month.
Club President Dr Lloyd gave a speech & welcomed Wayne
Jervis to receive his award for top points scorer, the outside
half who was hugely influential in the second half of the
season amassed a total of 246 points.
Gerwyn Davies was awarded top try scorer after claiming
17 tries in 22 games, Gerwyn’s versatility at being
able to play centre or on the wing will be invaluable at
next season’s higher level of rugby.
Former Wales & Llanelli flanker Gary Jones presented
tighthead prop Chris Waygood with most promising player,
Chris had a baptism of fire in his first season of senior
rugby & came through with flying colours, he beat of
a stiff challenge for the award from scrum half Ben Daniels
& flanker Masin Al Azzawi.
Carl Facey was a popular choice for most improved, the hooker
just beating Gerwyn Davies & second row Greg Booth.
The first team most committed player went to flanker Neil
Walker who had an excellent year & beat off the challenge
of Captain Chris Hanly & flanker Nathan Hughes.
Although 7 players were nominated, flanker/second row/centre
Nathan Hughes picked up nearly half of the votes & was
duly awarded player’s player of the year.
Not only did Nathan gain recognition by his fellow players
coach Mike Griffiths gave a speech where he pointed out
the top award was between flanker’s Neil Walker &
Nathan Hughes before announcing Ystrad Rhondda player of
the year Nathan Hughes, Hughes emulating last season’s
dual winner Thomas Hetherington .
Team Manager Mike Davies would like to thank Master of Ceremonies
John Watts for making it a great occasion & all the
supporters & sponsors who attended the event including
Sus-Met Interiors, South Wales Metal Finishing & Paul
Murphy Insurance Services. Proceeds from the raffle held
on the night went to Rhondda Schools Rugby.
