Alex Webber – 150 Up for Ystrad Rhondda RFC
As Alex Webber prepares to make his 150th appearance for Ystrad Rhondda RFC this weekend, we caught up with him to reflect on his journey with the club, his early memories breaking into senior rugby and his thoughts ahead of Saturday’s home fixture against Narberth.
Milestone & Reflection
Q) Alex, this weekend you reach 150 appearances for Ystrad — how does that feel?
AW) Obviously really proud coming through the mini and juniors at the club, the club has been a big part of my life. I’m glad I’ve been able to contribute to a successful team over the last 5 seasons since returning.
Q) You made your debut almost 16 years to the day, what were your early memories breaking into the senior squad?
AW) My earliest memories were being in the youth team and training with the firsts. Dylan quickly got his arm around me and him and Alan Roberts just give me the freedom to express myself take some chances.
Q) How have you seen the club evolve during those 16 years?
AW) The club are always looking to improve on and off the field and that’s credit to everyone involved. To me it started with the clubhouse and the rest has followed. Lots of hard work has gone on behind the scenes.
Role Within the Squad
Q) Since you’ve come home, you’ve obviously been a key part of the backline on and off the field. What do you feel has been your contribution to the team since your return?
AW) I think you’ll have to ask the boys what contribution I’ve made but I’d like to think they have been positive. I just try and bring some leadership to the young guys here.
Looking Ahead
Q) Narberth this weekend at Gelligaled Park to mark 150 appearances — what are you expecting from the game?
AW) It’s always a tough game, we are both in similar position in the league and both need a win so it should be a good battle.
Message to Supporters
Q) What message would you give to the supporters ahead of the game?
AW) Hopefully the sun will be shining and we can entertain them. We get great support home and away every week which goes a long way for the boys, so I’m expecting the same today.
