Ystrad Rhondda RFC is proud to showcase the thriving pathway that runs through our Minis and Juniors sections, right up to our Youth and Senior sides. The club has long been committed to developing local talent and giving young players the chance to grow both on and off the pitch – a vision that is very much alive today.
Growing Minis & Juniors Section
At the heart of the pathway is the Minis & Juniors, where boys and girls from the community take their first steps into rugby. Led by dedicated coaches and volunteers, the teams not only focus on skills and fitness but also on enjoyment, teamwork, and building friendships that last a lifetime.
Mini & Junior Chairman, Chris Hanly, highlighted the importance of this foundation:
“Our Minis and Juniors are the heartbeat of the club. The numbers we’re seeing each season are a real testament to the community’s commitment to rugby, and it’s fantastic to watch players progress through the age groups. We want every child to feel part of the Ystrad Rhondda family – whether they go on to play senior rugby or simply enjoy being active and making friends.”
Youth Rugby: A Vital Step
The club’s Under-18 Youth side is a key part of the pathway, bridging the gap between junior rugby and the senior game. With a strong emphasis on development and responsibility, the Youth team is preparing players not just to wear the blue jersey at a higher level, but to thrive as young adults.
Youth Team Head Coach, Craig Pearce, spoke proudly about the group’s progression:
“We’ve got a really talented bunch of lads in our Youth squad, but more importantly, they’ve got the right attitude. Our focus is on developing them as players and as people. Seeing them push through the ranks and eventually make their senior debuts is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”
From Youth to Senior Rugby
The pathway is designed to ensure a seamless transition into senior rugby. The first team continues to benefit from homegrown players who have developed through the Minis, Juniors, and Youth system, creating a strong identity and pride in wearing the Ystrad Rhondda badge.
First Team Head Coach, Dylan Jones, underlined how vital this structure is for the club’s success:
“The pathway has been crucial for many years. It means our senior side isn’t just a team – it’s a reflection of the whole community. When a player makes their first team debut after starting in the Minis it strengthens the bond right across the club, and I hope it inspires the younger ones to work hard to be the next player to make the breakthrough. If you look across the current squad there are players who have represented the pathway, from Alex Webber who broke into the senior side around 15 seasons ago, to Lewis Jones and Carwyn Owen who have progressed this season. It’s a massive thanks and well done to all our volunteers for the work that’s done at junior and youth level, and we’re in a really strong place thanks to that.”
Looking Ahead
With passionate volunteers, committed coaches, and an ever-growing player base, Ystrad Rhondda RFC’s pathway is ensuring that the club continues to thrive for generations to come. From the youngest Minis pulling on the jersey for the first time, to the Youth players stepping up to the senior stage, the future looks bright in the Rhondda Valley.
