As we continue to build and refine the Ystrad Rhondda Hall of Fame, we’re shining a light on some of the club’s most iconic figures—those whose achievements and character have shaped the twin blue jersey for generations.

This week, we sat down with Ystrad legend, Wales international, and British & Irish Lion, Mike Griffiths, to reflect on his journey from the Rhondda to the very top of the rugby world.

Mini Interview with Mike Griffiths

Q: Mike, when you think back to your time at Ystrad Rhondda, what stands out the most?

There’s something special about playing for your home club. It’s where everything starts—your love for the game, your sense of belonging, the friendships that last a lifetime. For me, Ystrad wasn’t just a club; it was a community that shaped who I became both on and off the field.

Q: How did Ystrad help prepare you for rugby at international and Lions level?

The Rhondda breeds tough rugby players. Week in, week out you learn to graft, to compete, and to respect the shirt. The grounding I got at Ystrad gave me the resilience and work ethic that I carried into Wales camps and, later, the Lions tour. I’ve always been proud of where I came from.

Q: Do you have a favourite memory from your playing days with the club?

There are too many to count! But I’d say the camaraderie stands out above any single moment. Whether it was a hard-fought win on a wet Saturday or a long night in the clubhouse afterward, it was always about the people.

Q: What does it mean to you to be recognised in the Hall of Fame?

It’s a huge honour. To be acknowledged by your own club means more than anything. I’ve seen the talent that’s come through Ystrad over the years, so to be part of this history is something I’m incredibly proud of.
