This weekend, former captain Liam Wiggins reaches an incredible milestone as he makes his 150th appearance for Ystrad Rhondda RFC. A product of the club’s pathway system, Liam has represented Merthyr, played overseas in New Zealand, and ultimately returned home to Ystrad — the place he calls his rugby family.
Here’s what he had to say ahead of the big day:
Q: Liam, 150 appearances for your hometown club — how does this milestone feel?
A:
“It means a huge amount to me. Ystrad is where I grew up, where I learned the game, and where I’ve had some of my best memories in rugby. To reach 150 appearances here feels special, and I’m proud to do it alongside the boys I’ve battled with for years.”
Q: You came through the Ystrad pathway system. How important was that experience to your development?
A:
“The pathway system at Ystrad played a massive part in shaping me as both a player and a person. The coaches gave me opportunities, pushed me, and taught me what it means to represent this club properly. It gave me the foundation that has carried me throughout my career.”
Q: You’ve had spells away, including Merthyr and six months in New Zealand with Greymouth Marist RFC. What did those experiences add to your game?
A:
“My time at Merthyr was huge for my development — being in a competitive environment helped me raise my standards.
New Zealand was completely different again. The six months with Greymouth Marist were unbelievable. The style of rugby, the culture, and the people there made it a brilliant experience. I came back home a better player and with a fresh appreciation for the game.”
Q: What was it that brought you back to Ystrad?
A:
“Home is home. I always knew I wanted to come back. The club means a lot to me and my family, and there’s something special about playing for Ystrad. When the opportunity came to return, it was an easy decision.”
Q: Anyone you’d like to thank as you reach this milestone?
A:
“Definitely. I’d like to thank DM Brickwork, my current player sponsor, for their continued support — it honestly means a lot.
A big thank-you as well to my previous sponsor and current employer, Kordell, for backing me over the years. I really appreciate everything they’ve done for me as a player.
And of course, my family, coaches, and teammates — I wouldn’t be hitting 150 without them.”
Q: Finally, how are you feeling heading into this festive derby against Beddau?
A:
“It’s a big occasion for the team and obviously a personal milestone for me, but my focus is just on performing well and contributing to the team effort. It’s always a tough fixture, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
As Liam prepares to run out for his 150th appearance, the milestone stands as a testament to his commitment, leadership, and long-standing connection with Ystrad Rhondda RFC. From his early days in the club’s pathway system to experiences across Wales and overseas, Liam has continued to represent the values of the club on and off the field. This weekend’s derby provides the perfect stage to celebrate a player who has given so much to the blue jersey — and who continues to lead by example every time he steps onto the pitch.
